Pandora
I was lucky enough to snag an invite for Pandora from Michael Arrington. Pandora works really well. You create ’stations’ by seeding them with an artist or song, and based on the qualities of the music you’ve chosen, the station will present a steady stream of songs with similar qualities. Unlike last.fm, which uses data from other users with similar tastes to make recommendations, pandora has analysed thousands of tracks to determine the similarities between various qualities of the music. You can find out more about how pandora works here.
The interface, done in flash, is a bit simple at the moment, but apparently new features are right around the corner. I’ve got a few stations that I’m listening to now; what I’d really like to be able to do though is play random tracks from each of them, in a kind of meta channel.
