A New Ning

Ning

At the start of the weekend we pushed out a new release of Ning, featuring a beautiful fresh design by Paul, some new and re-invigorated example applications (check out Group, Review It! and Video Sharing), and a ton of awesome work from everyone in the team. I think one of the coolest features of cloned apps created in Ning is that you can inherit upgrades and bug fixes that have been made in the original app simply by recloning your app or merging changes from the parent; this means that if you created an app to review restaurants last October, you can reclone your app now and grab all of the code and visual improvements that have been made since then, while keeping all of your data intact.

There are also some fantastic features set out in the roadmap, including REST-ification (’every App running on Ning will automatically have its own external web services API’), and a Ruby implementation (’Ruby is the next programming language we’re looking to support, and we’re aiming to bring Rails along with it’).

If you’re time-poor but still want to check out Ning, the best thing to do is have a look at Yoz’s screencast, where he builds a basic photosharing application with flickr integration in less than 10 minutes.
