Zoomin

At last, a decent mapping application for Australia with street level granularity and a beautiful interface: Zoomin.

Zoomin

It’s nice to see the emergence of an app by antipodean developers who are obviously clueful about the modern web. I say this because the options until now for utilizing map data in Australia have been both clunky and incredibly expensive.

The implementation of some of Zoomin’s features is particularly nice, including the as-you-type suggestion box under the search field, and the Street Number locator that appears when you’ve moved down to street level. The other terrific aspect is the app’s url structure, which features plain english addresses, like:

http://zoomin.com.au/australia/vic/melbourne/fitzroy+north/alfred+crescent/

There’s even a blog and an api for mapping and geocoding. The api use is currently limited to 1000 free requests per month, but this should still enable a ton of interesting development.
