Speech recognition in Windows using Python

I wrote this code after being frustrated by several VB and C voice recognition programs. None of them allowed any significant user scripting; whereas a system written in Python is very easy to extend using Python's "exec" command.

Uche and Chimezie Ogbuji: Dare's XLINQ examples in Amara

Dare's examples for XLINQ are interesting. They are certainly more streamlined than the usual C# and Java fare I see, but still a bit clunky compared to what I'm used to in Python. To be fair a lot of that is on the C# language, so I'd be interested in seeing what XLINK looks like from Python.NET or Boo. The following is my translation from Dare's fragments into corresponding Amara fragments (compatible with the Amara 1.2 branch). '1.

Making It Stick (Patrick Logan): Happy Goldfish in a Bowl

Having dabbled on the edge of AI for a number of years, I enjoy the technology as well as the philosophy that surrounds the subject. Jon Udell writes of the so-called Singularity... That's us: just goldfish to the post-human super-intelligences... True machine intelligence was what the advocates of strong AI wanted to hear about, not the amplification of human intelligence by networked computing.

Making It Stick (Patrick Logan): Streamlined Concurrency Modeling

I like this book Blaine refers to. It's been sitting on my shelf for a couple of years where I've picked it up and dusted off a few pages here and there. Recently I have been following it a bit in practicing *concurrent* programming as opposed to object programming per se. Concurrent processes can be seen as "active objects".

Wolfram Kriesing: phpSqliteAdmin Installation

I wanted a simple web based "download and run"-SQLite browser. So my choice was of course a PHP tool, first thing to look for is something like phpMyAdmin just for SQLite. There are two of them, with the same name "phpSQLiteAdmin":One by Yves GlodtAnother one by Richard Heyesand none of them works out of the box! So here is what I did to get number 2 (phpSQLiteAdmin by Richard Heyes) running. Continue reading "phpSqliteAdmin Installation"

Marko Samastur: No language feature is optional

Until recently I’ve been using Python 2.3.x almost exclusively and I thought it was about time I get more familiar with what 2.4 series has to offer. I’ve skimmed the list of new features when point zero version came out and found some things that I like (e.g sets) and some that I disliked (e.g. decorators). So, this time I invested a bit more time to actually read and understand what was on offer and how these features came about.

Andrew Channels Dexter Pinion - Andy Todd: OSDC 2005

My proposal to give a presentation at the Open Source Developer's Conference 2005 has been accepted. I'll be giving a thirty minute high level overview of PythonCard which will mainly be a hands on demonstration. The difference between this conference and others I have presented at is that I've got to write a paper for this one. The good news here is that because my presentation is going to be a demonstration there's no danger of me writing a document and then just standing up and reading it aloud.

Uche and Chimezie Ogbuji: Solution: simple XML output "templates" for Amara

A few months ago in "Sane template-like output for Amara" I discussed ideas for making the Amara output API a little bit more competitive with full-blown templating systems such as XSLT, without adopting all the madness of template frameworks. I just checked in the simplest patch that does the trick. Here is an example from the previous article: Amara 1.0 code: person_elem = newdoc.xml_element( u'person', attributes={u'name': unicode(person.name)} ) newdoc.xml_append(person_elem) Proposed Amara 1.2 code: newdoc.xml_append_template("<person name='{person.name}'/>") What I actually checked into CVS today for Amara 1.2: newdoc.xml_append_fragment("<person name='%s'/>"%person.name) That has the advantage of leaning as much as possible on an existing Python concept (formatted strings). As the method name indicates, this is conceptually no longer a template, but rather a fragment of XML in text form.
